Wisconsin now has a bill making it a felony to trespass on the grounds of an oil or gas pipeline. Critics say it was inspired by ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council) and pushed through the Legislature by the American Petroleum Institute. ALEC is notorious for promoting conservative causes. Peaceful opponents of the law include members of a tribe whose reservation is crossed by an Enbridge tar sands oil pipeline.
