Transparent glass panes using special thermochromic materials coated on glass or sandwiched between glass panels can darken in the sun’s glare and also act as solar panels. The smart windows could reduce a building’s air-conditioning demand while generating electricity. Air-conditioners use about 6% of all the electricity produced in the U.S., emitting 100 million tons of CO2 a year.
