The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a vast system of ocean currents that acts like a planetary conveyor belt carrying warm tropical water northward, helps keep regions like Europe relatively mild. A weakening AMOC will strengthen storms across parts of North America by the end of the century, including the California coast, and reduce them over Greenland and the Arctic.
