Running solar panels, batteries and heat pumps on DC power—not the AC current from the wall—could cut energy use and emissions. A household-scale “nanogrid” with direct current (DC) wiring could trim electricity use by almost a tenth compared to a conventional alternating current (AC) household system. Unfortunately, currently there are financial problems with making this conversion.
