UNSTABLE ICE SHELVES

Deep beneath the Southern Ocean warm water is creeping closer to Antarctica. A massive pool of heat—circumpolar deep water has expanded and edged toward the continent over the past 20 years, posing a growing threat to the continent’s delicate ice shelves that help stabilize the ice sheet. Ice shelves act as barriers holding back Antarctica’s inland glaciers and ice sheets. Together, they contain enough water to raise global sea levels by about 190 feet.
