Africa’s forests, once vital allies in fighting against climate change, have turned from a carbon sink into a carbon source after 2010. Heavy deforestation in tropical regions has led to massive biomass losses, far outweighing any gains from regrowth elsewhere. This could seriously undermine global efforts to slow climate change. Protecting forests is more urgent than ever.
