Over the past 30 years, the planet has lost about 50% of its coral. Heat stress, bleaching and mortality for coral reef bleaching from 2014 to 2017 were more severe than previously recorded. 80% experienced moderate or worse bleaching, and 35% showed moderate or higher levels of coral death. Over the past three decades, the planet has lost about 50% of its coral. Reefs are currently experiencing an even more severe fourth event, starting in early 2023.
