The proliferating data centers housing AI servers produce electronic waste (often containing hazardous substances), are large consumers of water, rely on critical minerals and rare elements (often mined unsustainably), and use massive amounts of electricity–spurring the emission of planet-warming greenhouse gases. That’s partly mitigated by using AI to develop green technologies or to improve existing ones.
