The Amazon rainforest in 2024 suffered its most devastating forest fire season in over two decades, triggering roughly Germany’s annual emissions. The estimated 791 million tons of carbon dioxide released mark a sevenfold increase from the previous two years average. This area represents 0.7% of Amazon’s remaining intact forest, the largest share hit by fires since 2021–nine times bigger than the average in over 20 years.
