A persistent challenge in renewable energy production has been generation of a by-product bio-tar–a viscous, toxic liquid presenting significant obstacles to biomass energy systems. It can now be transformed into bio-carbon, a high-value material usable as an adsorbent to clean polluted water and air, serve as electrode materials for next-generation supercapacitors for renewable energy storage, spark accelerating industrial chemical reactions more sustainably than traditional fossil-based alternatives, and function as a clean-burning fuel than nitrogen and sulfur oxides.
