Each year, more than 1.2 billion smartphones are produced. That’s energy-intensive and consumes valuable natural resources. Now old smartphones have been transformed into miniature data centers for real-world tasks like traffic and marine monitoring—at minimal cost. These tiny data centers could be used in urban environments like bus stops to collect real-time data on the number of passengers, and then used to optimize public transportation networks.
