WILDFIRES COST AND INSURANCE

Estimates indicate Los Angeles wildfires will be the costliest U.S. natural disaster–losses so far between $135 billion and $150 billion. Private homeowner insurance companies have been pulling out of California due to wildfires. Homeowners have been forced on to the California FAIR Plan (state-run insurer of last resort–very limited coverage). While Plan officials say they’re o.k. for now, they haven’t yet faced claims of many homeowners where the average home value is around $4 million. If this plan collapses, California taxpayers will be on the hook. Taxpayers across America are already paying out, via FEMA, in response to Hurricane Helene and other disasters.
