Household food waste per person in Japan appears to increase significantly with the household head’s age with elderly households potentially shown to have produced nearly twice as much food waste compared to households with the head in their 30s. Vegetables were the most often wasted food type. Greenhouse gas emissions associated with food waste also increased with the household head’s age. In this case vegetables, ready meals, and fish and seafood were the biggest contributors. If this applies to other countries it would be a good reason to determine how to help the elderly avoid food waste.
