Rock “flour” produced by the grinding under Greenland’s glaciers can trap CO2 when spread on farm fields. Natural chemical reactions break down the rock powder and lead to CO2 from the air being fixed in new carbonate minerals. Measures to speed up the process, called enhanced rock weathering (ERW), could remove billions of tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, and simultaneously significantly increase yields from food grown in the soil. Greenland’s giant ice sheet produces 1 billion tons a year of rock flour, flowing as mud from under the glaciers, meaning the potential supply of rock flour is essentially unlimited. This could be a major positive resource for dealing with the climate crisis.
