Last year unprecedented blazes released 35% more CO2 than in 2019, itself the previous record high for Arctic wildfire emissions. The fires came amidst a record-breaking Siberian heatwave as temperatures peaked at 38C (104F), the highest ever recorded temperature in the Arctic Circle. Simultaneously Arctic sea ice shrunk to its second-lowest level on record. Higher temperatures conducive to permafrost thawing are occurring roughly 70 years ahead of projections. Earlier this year, researchers warned that these gas-emitting processes are not fully accounted for in global projections–those projections are likely too low, making it harder for the world to curb climate change.
