IMPERILED INFRASTRUCTURE

Nearly a quarter of U.S. critical infrastructure—utilities, airports, police stations and more—is at risk of being inundated by flooding. The most threatened areas are concentrated along the U.S. southeastern coast and in Appalachia’s river-dense areas. Louisiana, Florida, Kentucky and West Virginia hold 17 of the 20 most endangered communities. Roughly 50% of Miami’s residences face some flooding risk, while 83% of critical infrastructure faces at least moderate risk. Of course there’s considerable risk elsewhere as flooding in New York City from Ida shows.

The report comes from the First Street Foundation, a Brooklyn nonprofit dedicated to making climate risk more visible to the public. If you want to know your flood risk, go to: https://firststreet.org/flood-factor/
