The American Petroleum Institute receives millions from oil companies while working behind the scenes to stall or weaken legislation. API is one of the U.S.’s most powerful trade organizations, driving the oil industry’s relationship with Congress. Shell, ExxonMobil, Chevron and BP are some of API’s major funders with Shell having given more than ten million last year alone. The trade group’s defining role is seen by some politicians as setting major obstacles to new climate policies and legislation. On top of that, it appears that most of the funding for the Republican party along with a lot of the big dark money, comes from the fossil fuel industry. Ongoing lawsuits against APR might or might not make any difference.
