LOSING LAKE MEAD

Our nation’s largest reservoir has registered its lowest level on record since being filled in the 1930s from the Colorado River. Millions will be affected by the River shortage alone, some being forced to make painful water cuts. The River flows are dwindling due to climate change-driven heat and drought (estimated to be the worst in 1200 years) along with increased demands for water. Lake Mead has fallen around 143 feet below its 2000 level, when last considered full. 25,000,000 people rely on it. It’s now at 36% capacity, and water levels are projected to drop another 20 feet by 2022. Hoover Dam power generation is down 25% due to low water levels. Farmers will be among the hardest hit.
